7 prequel movies that would have worked better as TV series, according to Reddit

Last month, Prey appeared on Hulu to widespread critical and audience acclaim. Praised for his acting and character development, Prey showed that, as a prequel to Predator, he could more than stand on his own feet. However, the prequels can vary in effectiveness.

While there could be many reasons why a prequel may not live up to the hype, one of them may be that the movie couldn’t fit such a big story into the film. While some work well as movies, others may have benefited more from a small-screen release.

The Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them

The The Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them Series have suffered from the law of diminishing returns. What was once a series that sparked the interest of Harry Potter fans has now lost much of its luster, with the most recent film Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secretsgrossing the lowest amount of money of any film in the Harry Potter series (via Variety).

One fan, Reddit User Random10187, spoke about his dislike of movies, which he thinks are poorly written, but not focusing on the books they’re based on. They think a series would work to give Newt Scamander more attention. “fantastic beasts could even have been a TV series about Newt, his passion for magical creatures and his adventures studying and documenting them to write his book.”

Star Wars prequel trilogy

In recent years, people have warmed to Star Wars prequels, The Phantom Menace, attack of the clones and Revenge of the Sith. While not perfect, they’re still fun movies that show just how good at world-building George Lucas is and still hold up today.

This is one of the reasons Reddit user No1PDPSStanAccount thought the movies might have worked better as short series. It would have given them more time to develop characters and would have given them more time to develop relationships (like Anakin and Padme). “I can also imagine the opening battle for ROTS spanning a good hour or so, telling the story not only from Anakin and Obi-Wan’s perspective, but also Palpatine and Dooku’s, as ‘they discuss the future of their ‘Sith Empire’,” they say, providing plenty more inspiration and ideas.

Alien: Alliance

Both Prometheus and Alien: Alliance have long divided fans of the original Extraterrestrial movies. For some, these are entertaining films, directed by the same legend, Ridley Scott, who brought the first film into the world. For others, they are disappointments that feel like a huge missed opportunity to develop the story of the Extraterrestrial universe.

Reddit user Pancake_Muncher thinks the movies try to pack too much into a short time and would work better as a series because of it. “I wish these prequels were a miniseries or a TV show that gave it space to expand the mythology, the motivations, and create the horror,” they said. While they’re certainly scary, there’s no doubt that a TV series could have brought in a new level of terror by building suspense. The jumpscares would have been much more unpredictable and unexpected.

Cruel

Cruel was a blockbuster movie for Disney when it was released in 2021. A strong performance from Emma Stone helped take a movie that might have been mundane and made it one to remember (even if it was a a character who actually didn’t need an origin story). However, for some, it fell back into the money-grabbing formula that many blamed on Disney with their live-action remakes and prequels.

Reddit user Ruraraid said the film did nothing to Cruel and was useless. They thought, if anything, Disney should make a series based on their characters instead of all these movies. “Hell, they might even do a series what if for their classic animated movies similar to Marvel Comics and MCU what if Given the success of this film, it seems unlikely that Disney will go down this path; however, the ideas are very intriguing, especially since some fans have wondered what would have happened if certain villains succeeded in their plans.

The Hobbit

Whereas The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will bring the iconic series to television for the first time, some thought the iconic Hobbit the books would work best as a TV show in the first place. The Peter Jackson prequels were hugely successful, but they didn’t quite hit the heights if the original The Lord of the Rings movies.

Interestingly enough, Reddit user Cranyx said he thinks The Hobbit the movies would work better as a TV show 7 years ago, highlighting things like how the book follows a more episodic structure then a 3-act structure that was used for the movies. “There are 20 chapters in the book, and I could easily see each one being a 10-30 minute episode depending on whether it was one of the longer chapters,” they said. While such budgets weren’t often given to TV in 2015, they are now.

Black Widow

by Scarlett Johansson Black Widow was a moderate success, considering it came out when streaming was at its peak due to the pandemic. He was praised for giving more backstory to Black Widowas well as performances by Johansson and Florence Pugh.

Reddit user Grom260 enjoyed the film, but felt it could have been helped with more time, saying “I think it would have been better as a Disney+ series where family drama and political intrigue could be fleshed out.” This opinion takes on even more meaning with the many Marvel shows on Disney+.

X-Men prequels

The X-Men movies did a soft reboot in 2011 with X-Men: First Class. The film was a big hit and led to many films that function as prequels and reboots of the series. However, while the films started out as critical and commercial successes, they were less acclaimed over time.

Reddit user IAmAOzzieNewsomeGuy mentioned it somewhat as star trekthey always believed that x-men would work best as a TV show, allowing time to flesh out each of its many characters. “The thing is, there really aren’t many opportunities to explore the entire cast and their stories on the big screen. In theaters, it’s still going to be a Wolverine (or now, Mystique) movie, with Professor Xavier and Magneto have big roles and the rest of the cast is just secondary.” The show would give them a more different direction to develop the characters, something the user didn’t think the original or the reboots did well.
