Even with all the amazing additions the MCU has seen over the past 18 months, nothing topped the success or hype of 2019. Avengers: Endgame. Starring Joe and Anthony Russo in the director’s chair, the fourth Avengers film was a true culmination event for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes before Phase 4 begins in January 2021.
Last year then became the biggest ever for MCU content, including a franchise-record four movies in one year to launch Phase 4 between July and December. This included a brand new solo film in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and a first team effort in Eternalswhile Scarlett Johansson Black Widow and Tom Holland Spider-Man: No Coming Home added to the stories that contributed to the success of the Infinity Saga.
Even though the Russos aren’t set to officially return to the MCU just yet, they’ve been keeping tabs on everything coming from Marvel Studios since delivering the second-highest-grossing movie of all time. Now, in a recent interview, half of this duo have revealed what their favorite new movie is from this new slate of projects.
Joe Russo’s Favorite Phase 4 MCU Movie
Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo revealed that Spider-Man: No Coming Home is his favorite Phase 4 MCU film in an interview with Den of Geek.
Russo praised No coming homethe caller “fantastic” and “perfect,” describing it as one of his best experiences in a movie theater in a long time. He also loved that he wasn’t directly involved in the movie itself, which gave him the chance to enjoy all the laughs and surprises with everyone sitting next to him:
“I thought No Way Home was amazing. It was fantastic. I thought it was perfect. It was one of the best moments I’ve had at the movies in a long time, and it was good not to being involved. As a movie buff, I could just go and sit in a movie theater and be surprised and laugh and cry with everyone in the movie theater.
Specifically, Russo noted how this movie brought fans together from everywhere after so much hardship and division through the global pandemic and through the state of American politics:
“I think the one thing that Marvel doesn’t get enough credit for is what else has bonded people after such a divisive time during the pandemic and after all this fabricated conflict that’s been going on in America in the last four years? But entering a theater, a race, a color, a creed, whether you are a Democrat or a Republican, it does not matter.
Russo then paid tribute to Marvel Studios as a whole for bringing people “together as a community” better than anyone in the world of cinema. And even as well as Marvel has done this with its films, Russo sees No coming home as a film that takes this concept to a whole new level:
“The power of cinema is its ability to bind people together as a community in a public space, respective of the background. And Marvel does that better than anyone, and I don’t think they get enough credit for And if that’s the real power of cinema, then they’re definitely the most powerful cinematic entity on the planet because you go to one of these cinemas, and, boy, there’s a lot of joy and happiness, and emotion, and the excitement comes through in any of their movies. And you don’t see that in any other movie. Even, historically, I’m not sure you’ve seen that level of excitement on a movie other than when Marvel is operating at the top of its game.
Endgame Director Loves What Spider-Man Delivered
In many ways, Spider-Man: No Coming Home is right there with Avengers: Endgame like a movie that doesn’t seem to exist when put on paper. Bringing together the three live-action Spideys and five former villains while introducing the multiverse to the MCU was about as big as any solo movie on its plate, but the threequel delivered in spades.
Even beyond its plot, Russo loved how the MCU’s third Spider-Man movie brought the fandom together in a way that hadn’t been seen since his own efforts on End of Game and its predecessor, Avengers: Infinity War. Exceeding nearly $2 billion at the global box office, fans everywhere couldn’t get enough of what Marvel and Sony brought to the table and came together to say how special the moment was in the Spider-Man legacy.
Experiencing the film as a fan also lent itself well to Russo’s experience, allowing him to experience everything No coming home‘s secrets as they appeared in the marketing and in the movie itself when it premiered. It was something that had been building for him ever since the threequel broke Endgame’s record for most-watched trailer to which he offered his own congratulations after it became official.
Getting such high praise from one of the biggest names in Marvel direction is something Sony and Marvel can hang their hats on as the trio really looked to make their mark as one of the super movies. -most ambitious heroes ever made.
