After hopping theaters and going to Disney + earlier this summer, Luca is landing a Chinese release date, a premiere for a Hollywood movie since June.
Luca is the first major Hollywood film since June to have a China release date. Originally slated for theatrical release, Disney has decided to release Pixar Luca’s latest film on Disney + on June 18, 2021, in the same way the studio did with the previous Pixar movie, Soul. Luca recorded a limited release at Disney’s El Capitan Theater in Hollywood, but the move has always left many Pixar employees feeling demoralized.
Now it seems that Luca will have his chance at the box office as Deadline reports that Luca has set a China release date of August 20, 2021. It is the first major Hollywood film to be released in China since Peter Rabbit 2: The Fugue in June, with Cruel being the last Disney film to screen in the country and having grossed over $ 24 million domestically to date. July was a blackout period for film imports, as China focused on local films, and the ban was expected to continue until August.
Many studios certainly hope that Luca is the start for big Hollywood tents to get release dates in China, as the country is making big box office revenues. Movies like Space Jam: a new legacy, Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins, and The suicide squad could certainly use the boost at the box office to offset their big production budgets. Disney is certainly hoping to get release dates for Black Widow and The jungle cruise, as well as the next Shang Chi and the legend of the ten rings and Eternals, which still does not have a release date for China. Given that Soul and Incredibles 2 performed well in China, Luca certainly has a good chance of bringing the audience to the theater.
