When it comes to uncovering Marvel Studios’ big secrets, apparently the House of Ideas has more holes in it than before. In a major article on the subject, The Hollywood Reporter went into depth about how so many Marvel secrets and spoilers managed to come out to the public earlier than expected. Recent examples of this have been when key moments and cameos from both Spider-Man: No Coming Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness began scouring Twitter, sometimes as early as four weeks before the film’s release. Trade notes that much of these leaks appear to be the result of more and more people, usually visual effects salespeople, working from home, but Marvel is still trying to keep some secrets.
In their report, THR notes that Marvel HQ has at least one room designed just to keep secrets. According to the trade: “Marvel even has a Black Widow room at its Burbank headquarters, with no internet connection or windows. Outside cleaning crews aren’t allowed in.” THR reveals that this space is reserved “where we discuss sensitive subjects”. It’s unclear whether sensitive topics mean casting, the MCU timeline, or even things like Scarlett Johansson‘s lawsuit against Disney, but it’s apparently where Kevin Feige makes big decisions.
One person who has confirmed the existence of the “Black Widow Room” is Kaz Firpo, one of the original Eternals screenwriters, who revealed that they worked on their first draft of the adaptation there. They confirmed that, yes, there are no windows, but the room has amenities that even that out.
“If we could, we’d write every movie somewhere out in the wild without anyone,” Firpo previously told THR of the secret room. “Writing the Eternals with Kevin [Feige] and Nate and Chloe and those incredible collaborators, it was a gift, even if it meant showing up every day for nine months in a windowless room. At least the walls were covered in artwork by the amazing Ryan Meinerding, Marvel’s amazing visual development team. We were writing pages, they were reading the pages, and then they were drawing and illustrating all these visions in our heads. And there was a free cereal bar.”
Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani has previously confirmed that when spoilers come out, or even before they can, Marvel Studios goes out of its way to put out fake leaks to combat them and keep fans on their toes. “r/MarvelStudiosSpoilers is my second home,” the actress previously wrote in an AMA. “However, I left the subreddit for two years during infinity war/endgame once I saw this leaked BARF case set pics which turned out to be a mistake Total Marvel Security. They literally planted this! and I now have so much respect for the Marvel Security team”
