Ryan Reynolds is forming his opinion on the sexuality of his rude antihero superhero character Deadpool loud and clear. Reynolds wanting to stay true to the source material in which Deadpool identifies as pansexual, hopes that in Deadpool 3 the character isn’t limited to the narrow storyline of heterosexuality featured in the first two films. In an interview with Variety, Said Reynolds
“What love for Deadpool is might not be what love is for Batman or someone else,” Reynolds says. “I think it could be played more. He is an outsider in every way, shape and form.
The character, named Wade Wilson is also “affectionately” known as Merc with the Mouth, has had many relationships with many different people (hmmm looks like all my friends lol) and is drawn to people of different genders.
Two writers from the original comic have publicly acknowledged the main character’s fluid sexuality. Gerry Duggan tweeted in 2013 that Deadpool is drawn to “anything that has a pulse.” Dubbing that, Gail Simone said in 2015 that she “had always viewed Deadpool as a pansexual”. Simone wrote the character for 12 years from time to time while Duggan wrote the character for three years from 2013.
Could the fact that “Deadpool 3” is being made under the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) have something to do with Reynolds openly discussing his desire for the character’s future. Deadpool 2 has already laid the groundwork for a more LGBTQ portrayal by featuring the first onscreen homosexual relationship between two female heroes, Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Yukio.
Reynolds wants the character to reflect more of the world we live in and better represent the fans for whom Deadpool is so loved, adding:
I certainly think this universe… has to represent and reflect the real world in a very real way, so yes. The great thing about Deadpool is that we’re allowed to do things that other superhero movies don’t necessarily do, and that’s probably one of them.
Fans will be eagerly awaiting the outcome of Reynold’s call to MCU. Hoping to see Deadpool hit men and women on the same night at the same bar! Filming for “Deadpool 3” is scheduled to begin in 2022.
