Salma Hayek plays Ajak, a wise and powerful healer, in Marvel’s Eternals, but she also has some awesome offscreen abilities. “My real super power has been brotherhood,” the Oscar-nominated actress said in a speech, read by Demi Moore, at the SHE The Women in Hollywood event in Los Angeles on Tuesday night.
While Hayek and his companion Eternals stars Angelina Jolie, Lauren Ridloff and Gemma Chan missed the ceremony as a safety measure following possible exposure to COVID-19, her good friend and colleague actress Moore read her inspiring words on unity and support between women, especially in the film industry, for the crowd.
“I come from a generation of women who had to create a united army of true warriors to break into an industry that consistently underestimated us,” Hayek wrote. “We had to support each other. But facing these challenges, she said, has given her “the privilege to experience and appreciate how powerful and united we are” as women.
By presenting the Frida and Desperado star, Moore pointed to another of Hayek’s talents. “There is no greater superpower than to be exactly who you are. And you, Salma, wherever you are, you are indeed a superhero,” she said.

“Thanks, Demi. You were always there for me, before you even knew I existed. Since the minute I went to you and had the courage to tell you what inspiration you have been for my life, you have been part of your in-laws, you have coached me through art of beauty, career choices, falling in love, pregnancy and the beauty of lasting friendships that defy time and geography.
My real superpower has been brotherhood. I come from a generation of women who had to create a united army of true warriors to break through an industry that systematically underestimated us. We had to support each other. We had to draw our strength from each other and we had to be smart as a united force. But I cherish this adversity because it has given me the privilege of experiencing and appreciating how powerful we are in solidarity. Tonight I am honored to be honored alongside my heroes: the legendary Rita Moreno, Halle Berry, Gal Gadot, Jennifer Hudson, Jodie Comer and my ‘Eternals’ sisters, Angelina, Gemma and Lauren. The recognition of SHE magazine is all the more meaningful to me as I share it with these amazing women. And speaking of amazing women, Chloe Zhao, thank you, not only for taking me under your wings, but for giving me the chance to fly.
