Were used to, but it gets ridiculous. Two of Marvel’s 2023 blockbusters have moved on the box office calendar. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s new release date is February 17, 2023, and The Marvels is now set to hit theaters on July 28, 2023.
Several Marvel movies have been pushed back over the past few years due to the COVID pandemic. When delays occur, Marvel owner Disney and other movie studios simply move their movies into slots held by their other movies (e.g. Paramount moved in the weekend originally scheduled for ). But it’s not that simple for Marvel: the interconnected storylines of the Marvel Cinematic Universe mean they often have to stay in a specific order in order to prepare for the next movie.
The episodic nature of the MCU is one of the things that keeps fans coming back for more, but it’s likely caused some headaches for the programming department over the past couple of years. Apparently The Marvels, starring Brie Larson, and Quantumania, starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly, aren’t so closely related that they can’t just switch places. Marvels are however tied to the TV showwhich is set to premiere on Disney Plus in June this year.
The next Marvel movie is May 6, followed by in July and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in November. Ant-Man 3 is now the first MCU movie of 2023, followed by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in May 2023. Marvels is now the furthest confirmed MCU theatrical release, as there are no dates yet for planned films featuring Blade, Deadpool, the Fantastic Four and others.
