Zach Galifianakis and Elizabeth Banks to star in Beanie Baby movie at Apple – The Hollywood Reporter

The ’90s Beanie Baby boom (and bust) is getting the feature film treatment it has long deserved.

Zach Galifianakis and Elizabeth Banks to star alongside Successionis Sarah Snook and Blockers actress Geraldine Viswanathan in The cap bubble that landed at Apple. The Imagine Entertainment project was written by Saturday Night Live Kristin Gore, who will co-direct the film with her husband and fellow filmmaker Damian Kulash, the Grammy-winning lead singer behind the band Ok Go.

The cap bubble, which is based on Zac Bissonette’s book The Great Beanie Baby Bubble: Mass Illusion and the Dark Side of Cute, draws inspiration from the ’90s craze that saw stuffed animals collected as financial investments due to their potential resale values.

The film’s description reads: “It draws the curtain on the absurdities and injustices of the American Dream – especially the female relationship with it.” It’s a celebration of the women who made Ty Warner so successful, whose strengths and good instincts shaped and amplified the phenomenon, but whose names do not appear on the heart-shaped labels of Beanie Babies.

Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Karen Lunder will be producing under the company’s first glance with the tech giant. Apple and Imagine’s upcoming projects include Black & Blues: Louis Armstrong’s colorful ballad and docuseries The models.

Galifianakis, who will also be executive producer on the film, is replaced by UTA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Yorn Levine. Banks is replaced by Untitled Entertainment, UTA and Johnson Shapiro. Snook is replaced by UTA, Shanahan Management and Omni Artists. Viswanathan is replaced by WME, 3 Arts and Sloane Offer. Gore, Kulash, Bissonette and Imagine Entertainment are all represented by CAA.
